This study was conducted to identify the prevalence and affecting factors of depressive symptoms by sex among the elderly. 5,279 subjects(¡Ã 60) of the Korean Retirement and Income Study (KReIS) were analyzed according to socio-economic status, health level and self-rated health status. The prevalence of depressive symptoms (CES-D?21) was 19.9%, male 16.24%(moderate: 5.9%, severe: 10.3%), female 23.5% (moderate: 9.2%, severe: 14.3%). And the risks of depression were associated with non-economic activity state, worse self-rated physical health state and less daily and social activity in whole elderly. Especially, those were increased in older and living Province area compared to Seoul subjects in female. Therefore, to prevent the depression of the elderly, it should be considered the health policy and program specified by sex and age as important intervention of depression.
